Dear Blogfordarfur,
Hello, my name is Tristan Jean and I am the Interpreter Recruiter for Certified Languages International, an interpreting agency. We are currently looking for interpreters to service the needs of refugees entering the United States from Darfur, and I have a couple questions. First of all, I am unsure exactly what languages we need interpreters for, as I have had trouble finding out what languages are spoken by the majority of refugees coming from the region. I have been told that Fur is one of the most important languages to service for these people, though, considering that the region is itself named after the Fur people, which brings me to my next question: do you know of anyone who would be a good over the phone Fur interpreter? Qualified interpreters should speak fluent Fur and at least decent English, have access to a land-line telephone, and preferably be available during most of the day during weekdays. Of course, these same qualifications apply to those who would like to become interpreters for the other languages spoken by the Darfur refugees (Massalit and Daju, perhaps?). We would be willing to pay Darfurian interpreters as independent contractors at a rate of $0.75 per minute for all time spent on the phone interpreting, so while this would be a good source of part-time income for someone with another source of income right now, it may turn out to be a full-time job as more and more refugees from the region arrive in the US.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, as we currently have no interpreters for the languages spoken by Darfurian refugees and we would definitely would like to help service this community.
Best regards,
Tristan Jean
