Darfur – Weekend Reading.

30 Mar

Sokari of Black Looks responds to an essay first published by the London Review of Books on 8 March 2007 .

The politics of naming: genocide, civil war, insurgency. The essay by Professor Mahmood Mamdani the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government in the Departments of Anthropology and Political Science at Columbia University, did gave me pause but Sokari writes it best and has a larger base of knowledge so I highly recommend reading Sokari’s responding post There is “No Genocide in Darfur” as well as the aforementioned essay by Professor Mamdani.

I think Mamdani is misguided. Of course not all interventions work out or are in good faith, but I’m glad we went into Yugoslavia and wish we had sooner.
