Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir stressed on Saturday that the crisis in the western Sudanese region of Darfur was “heading for solution”.
Al-Bashir made the announcement while addressing the opening session of the 50th meeting of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU).
“The Darfur issue is heading towards solution according to the plan of the UN secretary general amended by the summit of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union,” al-Bashir told the APU session.
In the meantime a U.N. Peacekeeper in Darfur Fatally Shot
A United Nations peacekeeper who was among a small group of reinforcements sent to Darfur was shot to death at his residence _ the world body’s first casualty since its long-negotiated arrival in the troubled region, officials said Saturday.
Gunmen looted the home of the U.N. peacekeeper _ an Egyptian lieutenant colonel _ in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, and fatally shot him late Friday, the African Union and U.N. said.
