President orders sanctions on Sudanese businesses: Via LA Times.
resident Bush today ordered new economic sanctions on 31 companies and three key individuals in an effort to pressure Sudan’s government to stop policies that in the last four years have killed more than 200,000 people and displaced 2.5 million.
“For too long, the people of Darfur have suffered at the hands of a government that is complicit in the bombing, murder and rape of innocent civilians,” Bush said in an early morning announcement. “I promise this to the people of Darfur. The United States will not avert our eyes from a crisis that challenges the conscience of the world.”
