Via Sudan Tribune: US says not supporting boycott of Beijing Olympics over Darfur
“The United States is not supporting the suggestion of a boycott of the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing to protest China’s support of the Sudanese government, the State Department said Monday.”
China has rejected growing criticism that it is not wielding its influence with Sudan to stop bloodshed in the Darfur region, but activists have been stepping up pressure.
French politicians floated the idea of an Olympic boycott during their country’s recent presidential race, and actress Mia Farrow and others are pushing corporate sponsors of the Games to pressure Beijing to do more.
The French are right and we are wrong. We call it a genocide but refuse to put our money where our mouth is, or in reality we refuse to let our collective pocketbook suffer to end the suffering of others.
There are of course a multitude of reasons that China should have never gotten the Olympics games to begin with. I know there are some who would argue that by giving them a reason to shine for the rest of the free world we give them reason to increase their freedoms, but that old song “We Won’t be Fooled Again” keeps playing around in my head.
