Eight members of Darfur’s rebel Justice and Equality Movement received the death sentences this week even as the IDP camps are increasingly violent, and residents are manipulated by the government.

Last month the International Criminal Court prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo asked for an arrest warrant to be issued against Sudanese President ‘Umar Al-Bashir for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur. Al-Bashir is attending an economic summit of African leaders in Turkey where he continues to deny that a genocide took place.

The hybrid UN/African Union peacekeeping mission is unlikely to be fully operational any time soon. Just another promise broken.
