Dr. Denis Mukwege, African of the Year

16 Jan

Dr. Denis Dr Mukwege, featured in the film “The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo“, a documentary we promoted here back when it first aired on HBO last spring, and one we still highly recommend,
has been chosen “African of the Year” by the Daily Trust, Nigeria’s fastest growing news journal.

Dr Mukwege, who is the proprietor of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu in the Democratic Re-public of the Congo’s troubled South Kivu Province, was recognized for the award for his role in taking care of and rehabilita-ting women and children who are rape victims in the on-going Congo war.

Mukwege is African of the Year …Runners up: Christiana Thorpe, Salif Keita

I saw “The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo” and was so moved by it that I blogged about it. Dr. Mukwege is very deserving of this award. He does so much to repair women’s savaged bodies as a result of rape and other torture. He also has a wonderful spirit about him that is truly amazing given what he deals with day in and day out. I applaud Dr. Mukwege and thank him for his brave and important work.
