The Darfur Peace Conference, a civil society conference on Darfur, the largely Darufurian led initiative supported and organized by Mandate Darfur, to have been held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, “with the aim of building what its organizers call a mandate for peace”, has been flagrantly unhinged by Sudan’s government.. According to All Africa, the conference had the support of the African Union, the Arab League, the United Nations and a range of former African leaders.
In a statement issued on Friday by the foundation on behalf of Mandate Darfur, it said conference organizers had tried to work with the Sudanese government since the initiative began.
But Sudan’s security services had “harassed our delegates, confiscated passports and threatened the conference coordinators in Sudan.”
This is a very unfortunate situation, the conference could have been a great starting point for Darfurians, but one that does clarify, to some extent, why the people of Darfur need the help of the international community in order to help themselves.
