I have to believe that Sean Penn had good intentions, but once he got into Haiti, really into Haiti, he had to change course and direction. Many of us have good intentions going into a situation. I was with a missionary team in the Dominican Republic five years ago. The men helped to build a church. The women worked with the children and prayed with the sick and dying. The crisis in the DR was not tantamount to Haiti, but still, in leaving there I felt helpless. So much work to do, so little money, politics are involved and I had a life in the States. Penn has been in Haiti ten months? Kudos to him. I prefer to think of it as on-the-job training for a well-meaning celebrity. So he carries a Glock? There is violence abounding in Haiti. He did not go to become a martyr; he went to do some good. Can’t very well do that if you are dead. That’s the reality.
